Description
Medium-sized, broad, bushy, slow growing deciduous tree (12-15 m, W 6-10 m). Crown broadly ovate to broadly spherical. Branches upright to widely spreading, later slightly hanging. Bark on young shoots green-brown, smooth; later grey, flaky. Leaves broadly ovate (15-20 cm), pinnate, with 13-19 leaflets, glabrous, dark green, lighter and slightly hairy beneath; autumn colour yellow to orange. Flowers in clusters (6-10 cm), simple, cup-shaped (1,5-1,8 cm), white. Flowering period: April-May. Fruits in smaller clusters, round to pear-shaped (2-4 cm), fleshy, juicy, yellow, yellow-brown to partly red. To be used fresh, dried, for juicing or for cooking and making jams. Ripening time: September-October. Attracts butterflies, bees and birds. Undemanding tree, tolerates heat, occasional drought and urban conditions, grows well also in heavy soils.
